Not only is Sardinia famed as one of the most naturally beautiful places in the world, it also happens to be a great place to visit in autumn. Temperatures are a pleasant 27 degrees and the Autunno in Barbagia festival is on. This is a truly unique way to discover the region, where 27 different towns and villages bring their ancient customs to life. Take part in a workshop with local craftsmen, enjoy street markets and sit down for dinner with the locals in their home dining room. Culture aside, the ocean temperature hovers around 15 degrees at this time of year, so all you need to do is throw on your bikini, grab your favourite pair of sandals and head out to find your nearest hidden beach. Trust us, there are a lot of them.
For something a little different, Dubrovnik comes into its own during the autumn. The huge tourist crowds are long gone and the region’s authenticity breathes easy again. This is the place to go for a chilled out atmosphere, great food and even better beaches. You can also hop on a local ferry to explore nearby islands. Foodies should head to Sipan which is famous for agricultural produce including wines, olives and citrus fruit with no shortage of tastings on offer! As you’re likely to be doing lots of day trips and boat hopping, don’t forget to take your backpack for easy style and a comfortable way to carry all the essentials.
If you can be a little more flexible with a last-minute getaway, go long haul and head to Florida. Indulge your inner child with a trip to Disney World, Universal Studios and the Magic Kingdom where days go by in a flurry of bright colours, naughty food and thrilling rides. If you fancy something a little more chilled, the Florida Keys offer some of the best snorkelling in the world or try your hand at diving around the famed Dry Tortugas National Park in the Gulf of Mexico.
The Canaries are known for their lovely climate all year round but the autumn is a wonderful time to go. Expect daytime temperatures of 29°C, and beautifully blue, warm seas. Lanzarote is the hottest of them all but each island offers a wonderful and very different experience. Fuerteventura has the best beaches while the golf courses on Gran Canaria are spectacular. The lesser known La Gomera is home to a national park where you can wander among rugged landscapes for days on end with only the wildlife for company.
